VIRTUOUS CIRCLE (School project | Mar. - April. 2017)

Narrative | 2 player coop | PC

Engine: Unity

Roles: Narrative Designer, Programmer

Here is the little story of an otter, a gull and a human, that each have a big problem to deal with. But this is not something they can take care of on their own, so you will have to grab a friend and go together in this karma journey.

As this project had a really small scope, I also offered to work on the code to improve my programming skills. I ended up being in charge of the “human” controls but also took care of some narrative effects (such as screen fades) and interactions between characters.

This was one of our first narration-oriented projects at school, that we had to develop by teams of 3 Game Designers. The only limitation was that we should not have more than 3 sentences displayed in the whole game, but since there was no artist in the team we also had to figure out how to give hints about who were the characters without assets or animations.

This exercise’s goal was to give us an idea of what our job could be as a Narrative Designer, as we had to think about how the characters would act given a context, thus deducting their abilities and interactions to each other. Considering that we wanted to have 3 characters between which 2 players would switch, we also had to deal with the challenge of not making them too different so switching would not be too confusing. In the end, after only giving little information about the story to players, they managed to understand what was happening just by playing.

Explaining interactions through icons was one of the tools we used to make sure players understood what they could do.
